Dr. Eloho Basikoro is the founder and president of BATOP Research and Consulting Services. Dr. Basikoro has 14 years of experience in teaching, research, and international development. She holds a doctorate degree in health and medical geography from the University of Washington, Seattle, where she taught classes on geography, gender, development, and global health. Dr. Basikoro holds masters degrees in geography, and geography & regional planning from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville and University of Benin, respectively.
Dr. Basikoro’s core competencies include HIV/AIDS, global health, gender & women, international development, critical development studies, feminist political ecology, climate change & global warming, and human-environment relations. Her skills and technical expertise span qualitative and quantitative research designs and methodologies, program implementation and management, monitoring and evaluation, community engagement and development, grant writing, and geographic information systems (GIS). As part of her experience working in the NGO sector, she implemented and evaluated several donor-funded programs in over 100 communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Basikoro also has consulted for the United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF).
Dr. Basikoro is an award-winning author. Her book, Pathologies of Patriarchy: Death, Suffering, Care, and Coping in the Gendered Gaps of HIV/AIDS Interventions in Nigeria, was awarded the 2020 Amaury Talbot Prize—for the most valuable work in African Anthropology—by the Royal Anthropological Institute, United Kingdom. Pathologies of Patriarchy also was listed in the 2020 Choice Outstanding Academic Titles (OATS) list by the American Library Association (ALA). This book, which is based on Dr. Basikoro’s dissertation research, explores and illuminates the health disparities that women with HIV from a minority and marginalized region experience in their access to antiretroviral drugs. This research attracted substantial funding from the Association of American University Women (AAUW), and Dr. Basikoro was subsequently profiled during World AIDS Day as one of the fellows doing important gender research on women and HIV/AIDS. Dr. Basikoro also has several conference presentations to her credit, in both local and international contexts.
Dr. Basikoro is passionate about gender equality, and promoting and protecting the rights of women and children. As a member of AAUW, Dr. Basikoro spends her time promoting gender equality for women and girls, and supporting AAUW's efforts to promote gender-sensitive legislation through lobby corps visits to lawmakers in Washington DC and through AAUW's annual book sales—the proceeds are used to provide scholarships to minority female students in Montgomery County, Maryland. Dr. Basikoro loves to read, cook, and travel.
